Bipe 40 manufacturing flaw
Question:
I just wanted to let you know about a manufacturing/quality flaw with a Bipe 40 I purchased 3 years ago. Up until recently, the plane flew great and was a joy to fly. However, when pulling out of a dive, the upper wing broke into 2 pieces. Upon careful examination, it appears that the upper spare located between the 3rd and 4th ribs was actually 2 separate pieces of wood. They were glued together by the shear web. Unfortunately, the portion of the spare extending from rib 3 to the end of the wing was not securely glued to the shear web and finally failed. As you can imagine, the resulting crash was catastrophic.
I thought this information maybe useful to pass along to manufacturing since it appears someone thought it would be OK to construct a wing with a spare made up of 2 separate pieces.
Thank you for your time,
Jim
Answer:
Dear Jim,
Thank you for your kind advice. It was once a known problem but had been improved later. As Bipe 40 is discontinued, we will be more careful with similar design of two-wing plane in the future.
